International lawyers warn the anti-LGBTQ+ bill breaks Ghana's own constitution

The International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute condemned the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, warning of grave human rights implications and a significant expansion of criminalisation beyond what Ghanaian law previously covered.

The objection is not only moral. Ghana's 1992 Constitution guarantees dignity, equality before the law, freedom of expression, and freedom of association. A statute that punishes identity and speech about identity cannot be reconciled with those guarantees, and it puts Ghana at odds with the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights it has ratified.
