CHRAJ presses Parliament for stronger legal safeguards against torture
The commission wants an amendment bill fast-tracked to strengthen protection from torture and degrading treatment in custody.
26 June 2026

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice renewed its call for Parliament to fast-track a CHRAJ Amendment Bill strengthening safeguards against torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
CHRAJ has raised the same concern repeatedly, including in a formal advisory on torture in 2019 and in public warnings to police against mistreating suspects.
Without a statutory offence of torture, an enforceable custody record and independent inspection powers, the commission is left recommending rather than requiring.
