Amnesty's annual report on Ghana: FGM, witchcraft accusations and the family values bill

28 April 2025

Amnesty International's annual report entry for Ghana notes the continued practice of female genital mutilation, witchcraft accusations that threaten women's rights to life and health, and the risks posed by the family values bill.
FGM has been a criminal offence in Ghana since 1994, and prosecutions remain rare.
Reading the three together is the point: the same communities carry the accusations, the cutting and the poverty that makes both harder to escape.
