'Branded for life': the women living in northern Ghana's witch camps
Amnesty International documented violence, banishment and the absence of any remedy for hundreds of accused women.
1 April 2025

Amnesty International's report documented human rights violations against hundreds of women accused of witchcraft and forced to flee to camps in northern Ghana, including violence, destitution and the absence of reparation.
Most of the women are elderly, widowed or living with a disability. Accusation often follows a death, an illness or a property dispute in the family.
Once a woman is in a camp, there is no formal process to clear her name and no authority responsible for returning her home safely.
