People living with HIV still meet stigma at the clinic door
Peer-reviewed research in Ghana found stigma inside healthcare settings is still shaping whether people stay in treatment.
22 November 2024

A study published in BMC Health Services Research found that people living with HIV in Ghana continue to perceive and experience stigma while seeking care, with direct consequences for treatment engagement and retention.
Stigma in a health facility is not an attitude problem alone. It shows up as delayed appointments, breached confidentiality, and being made to wait separately — all of which teach people not to come back.
The research matters because Ghana's treatment targets depend on people staying in care for life, not simply testing once.
