Most Ghanaians still do not have a decent toilet

WaterAid reporting finds water access far ahead of sanitation, with a wide urban-rural gap.

1 August 2023

WaterAid reports that while a large majority of Ghanaians have water nearby, most of the population still lacks access to a decent toilet, with stark disparities between urban and rural communities.

Sanitation determines who gets cholera, which girls stay in school during menstruation, and which neighbourhoods flood with waste in the rains.

It is treated as an infrastructure budget line rather than as a right, which is why it keeps losing to other priorities.
