Chained at a prayer camp, six years after the practice was banned

Human Rights Watch found people with mental health conditions shackled by the ankle at faith and traditional healing centres.

30 October 2023

Human Rights Watch documented a woman chained by the ankle at a prayer camp in the Eastern Region and called on Ghana to enforce the ban on chaining introduced in 2017. In earlier research the organisation found 22 men chained in a dark room at a traditional healing centre.

A first-person account published by HRW described a woman held at the Mount Horeb Prayer Camp in a musty room, restrained and made to use a bucket.

At the UN Human Rights Council in 2023, member states condemned Ghana's continued shackling of people with mental health conditions.
